IP VOICE EXTENDER AIDS VOIP DELIVERY OVER LONG DISTANCES
11 May 2005 - Microtel Ltd
| The new IP Voice Extender from Microtel offers a simple solution to the problem of delivering IP telephony over long lines. Using the existing telephone cable infrastructure if required, the IP Voice Extender can drive multiple IP telephones at distances of up to 5.5 km, depending on line quality. |
The new product overcomes most of the shortcomings in IP deployment encountered by many organisations migrating to IP PABX, particularly on larger diverse site installations. The Microtel IP Voice Extender is a fully scalable solution starting with an 8-port version, increasing to 16 or 24 in a 1U chassis and up to 192 ports in a 3U 19-inch chassis. For larger deployments, 864 ports can be accommodated in a 19-inch 11U chassis. This scalability makes it cost-effective at all levels when compared with the cost of Category 5 wiring, analogue extension modules or AC15. Savings can also be gained in deployment times as a more uniform programming system can be used on site, as all extensions will look the same to the IP PABX. The IP Voice Extender solution also benefits from being able to use the same IP telephones at all end points and supporting all the same features as those on the LAN. In addition, all the remote end points may be managed from a central site. Using the IP Voice Extender can negate the need for re-cabling old buildings or sites where access or ascetics present a problem. Historically, for off-premises extensions to outlying buildings or a large campus site, traditional PABX systems could either drive an analogue phone or use AC15C. Depending on the copper and PABX drive, analogue extension could work up to 7 km, and AC15C could be carried over 4W circuits to almost unlimited sites. In IP PABX or IP office systems, an AC15C equivalent is easily achieved by using a virtual private network, but without a device such as the IP Voice Extender remote telephones on large sites remain a problem, since IP phones connected and power from the LAN are limited in distance to around 100 m using Category 5 cabling. Most IP PABX systems can have analogue modules added but, being derived from a network device, do not have the power available to drive telephones on long lines.
