NORWEGIAN PETROLEUM DIRECTORATE AND SCHLUMBERGER EXTEND CAPABILITY AND FUNCTIONALITY OF DISKOS COMMON NATIONAL DATA REPOSITORY
20 December 2004 - Schneider Electric Ltd

Schlumberger Oilfield Services announced today that the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) and Schlumberger have extended the capabilities and functionality of the DISKOS common national data repository. DISKOS data and services are now available to all companies interested in investing or operating in the Norwegian continental shelf, through the web at www.sinas.slb.com

'Schlumberger was selected to manage and operate DISKOS because they shared our vision of an open, easily accessible and efficiently managed data repository to create value and improve resource management,' said DISKOS project manager Eric Toogood. 'Over the past 12 months, Schlumberger information management expertise, technology and infrastructure have been leveraged to deliver these services and bring significant added value to the NPD, DISKOS members, and now with this latest step, to the broader industry. In opening up public access to non-proprietary data via the Internet, Schlumberger is making a significant contribution to our quest to make the Norwegian continental shelf more attractive to new investors.'

Enhancements to the existing service include the addition of application service provision (ASP), integrated with the data provision to deliver more efficient oil and gas processes.

The value of managed data additionally has been enhanced by the inclusion of the Expeditor pre-stack seismic data management system, which now manages 20 terabytes of pre-stack seismic data for DISKOS.

'High quality data, information and open access are key requirements to enhancing real-time exploration and production processes,' said Olivier Le Peuch, president, Schlumberger Information Solutions. 'By extending the scope of service still further, the DISKOS project is enabling the industry to make very significant savings in direct costs and is being recognized for its value, as demonstrated by the significant growth of the DISKOS community and a 50% increase in data access rates in the past year.'

The DISKOS repository - the world's first national and multi-company data repository for exploration and production related data - was established in 1994 by the NPD and four oil companies. Today the DISKOS Group is composed of the NPD and 16 oil companies represented on the Norwegian continental shelf. It is an online installation now containing 85 terabytes of seismic, well and production data that provides petroleum experts in oil companies with secure access to data from their respective workplaces.

The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate is administratively subject to the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy, and advises the Ministry on matters concerning the management of the petroleum resources on the Norwegian continental shelf. The NPD is responsible for ensuring that data and information from petroleum activities are made available to the industry and the public.

The NPD shall contribute to creating the highest possible values for society from oil and gas activities, founded on a sound management of resources, safety and environment. The NPD was established in 1972 and has 210 employees.
