AXIA LIFTING SERVICE LAUNCHED
20 October 2004 - Schlumberger

Schlumberger Oilfield Services today announced the launch of its Axia lifting service that improves overall performance of a well's lifting system. The Axia lifting service includes equipment installation and real-time monitoring, surveillance and diagnostic services for electrical submersible pumps (ESP). In addition, the service provides a new simpler designed ESP with integral instrumentation, surface hardware and secure connectivity.

The Axia lifting service includes equipment installation and real-time monitoring, surveillance and diagnostic services for electrical submersible pumps (ESP). In addition, the service provides a new simpler designed ESP with integral instrumentation, surface hardware and secure connectivity.

'Monitoring the pump in real-time results in trends and histories, meaning that events can be detected before pump damage occurs,' said Saad Bargach, president, Well Completions & Productivity, Schlumberger Oilfield Services. 'This extends the pump run life and increases well uptime - ultimately reducing operational risk and overall costs while increasing production.'

Monitoring with the Axia lifting service resulted in a 70% oil production increase in one well. The real-time surveillance and control system provided instant notification when an alarm situation occurred. The monitoring service provided continuous pressure and temperature data from the ESP and played an integral role in improving pump and well operations, as well as identifying detrimental events that affected the ESP's performance. The operator's time and effort were spent improving well performance and preventing problems rather than gathering data and reacting to problems.

Three tiers of service offering are available for the Axia service: monitoring, surveillance and diagnostic. The service is available only with a new generation ESP that features a simple two-piece assembly. The simple design significantly reduces assembly time at the well site and results in a more reliable installation. There is no upfront capital expense for customers, as the ESP is included with the service agreement, which is based on performance success.

Real-time monitoring and control features include remote data acquisition and transmission; alarms and alerts via satellite; remote pump startup and speed control; and remote resolution of certain pump problems.

Lower operating costs result from combining operator field knowledge with Schlumberger artificial lift expertise and capabilities, real-time measurement and connectivity technology, and optimization services staffed by Schlumberger Data & Consulting Services experts. This results in fast performance evaluation of the lift system and the well, and leads to quick corrective action if necessary. Costs are reduced through more efficient managing of field operations and production improvement by evaluating every well.
