AXALTO MAKES STRONG SHOWING AT CARDTECH/SECURTECH 2004

Axalto, a Schlumberger company and the world's leading provider of high-end microprocessor smart cards, returned to the annual CardTech/SecurTech 2004 trade show with demonstrations of their latest technology and multiple presenters on the CTST conference agenda, including CEO Olivier Piou, a featured speaker at the SIM Americas Summit. In association with Sun Microsystems and ST Microelectronics, Axalto also named the winners of the 'e-gate Open 2004' contest. Participants had been invited to develop new secure e-business solutions or applications using Axalto's USB enabled e-gate smart cards, and the contest finalists were featured in the Axalto booth. In addition, the company was a sponsor of the CTST smart card used for entry of participants into the show.

The presentations and displays at the show demonstrated how 'Axalto Provides the Vital Link' for security and application-enabling in mobile communications, access, financial services and government. Highlights included access solutions for enterprise password management, card management, one-time passwords, strong authentication and Linux compatible smart cards. An e-Passport government application and Axalto POS terminals operating with contactless cards were also featured.

Axalto speakers at the CTST 2004 Conference included:

Olivier Piou, president of Axalto and chairman, Eurosmart: 'Drivers of SIM Card Replacement: Ensuring a Smooth Migration to 3G' presented the issues related to migration from 2G SIMs to 3G USIMs and the the WNO value proposition that supports an early transition. Mr.Piou also lead the CTST annual Eurosmart press conference.

Neville Pattinson, director of access and public sector marketing & technology, 'Smart Cards, A Vital Link in the Chain of Trust for ID Systems and Credential Verification' focused on the importance of Smart ID Cards in the life cycle of credentialing systems and their role as a security agent of the issuer.

Tom Johnston, retail and banking business development manager: 'Leveraging Smart Cards to Enhance and Build Customer Relationships' addressed cross-selling, convenience, security and privacy offerings for financial service firms that want to create higher product/customer ratios and generate new revenues.

Matthew Radcliffe, business development manager, 'Smart Card Implementation: Managing the Project' looked at project planning for smart card systems and considerations before beginning a smart card program.

Jack Jania, director of field marketing, North America mobile communications, moderated the SIM Applications and Technologies sessions, with reports from the major standards-setting bodies, accounts of carrier experiences with new technologies and an update on Java Card interoperability improvements.

Colin Elliott, director, global security, Schlumberger, also discussed 'Smart Cards for Both Physical and Network Access' as illustrated by Schlumberger's own unified employee identity credentials program now largely deployed to its 80,000 employees worldwide. This presentation will assess the benefits achieved, and lessons learned for the PKI implementation, card issuance systems and system, desktop and notebook solutions.
