SCHLUMBERGER INTRODUCES ADVANCED SCIENTIFIC APPROACH TO WELL CLEANOUT
23 March 2004 - Schlumberger

Schlumberger Oilfield Services introduces a scientifically advanced approach to well cleanout with the launch of its multicomponent PowerCLEAN system at the SPE/ICoTA Coiled Tubing Conference and Exhibition March 22 – 24, Houston. Designed for wellbore fill removal using coiled tubing, the PowerCLEAN system is an integrated solution that includes job design software, a proprietary nozzle design for greatly improved cleaning ability, specialized fluids, and a real-time solids monitoring system to detect solids as they are removed to the surface.

This new service has been developed through extensive research and rigorous testing to enable optimum cleanout of sand, bauxite and similar particles under virtually any wellbore condition, including large casing, high-temperature and any deviation angle. 'Clean wells make better producers! The integrated PowerCLEAN system has all the elements needed to address even the most complex well geometries. PowerCLEAN brings another powerful tool to our arsenal of techniques for helping our customers get the maximum production from their well stock.' said Mark Corrigan, Well Services President, Schlumberger.

Conventional cleanout nozzles have a forward or forward-backward jetting action which can leave debris in the wellbore. This new system uses a swirling effect to create a fluid vortex which carries removed particles up the wellbore. A new low friction fluid, with unique capabilities at higher temperatures, allows the system to achieve higher flow rates without increasing pumping pressure and so improve operational efficiency and safety. The job procedure can be optimized through significant enhancements to the job design software and the addition of a nonintrusive system for real-time solids monitoring.

In a Gulf of Mexico well with a maximum deviation of 68 degrees, the system was used to clean excess gravel pack (bauxite) from the top of a gravel-pack assembly. The cleanout was highly successful, with approximately 12,000 lbm of bauxite removed from the well in 12 hours. When the coiled tubing was run in again, it tagged the rope socket on the gravel pack assembly, confirming that the well was totally cleaned. After the procedure, well production increased to 2.5 Mscf/d from 0.5 Mscf/d.
