SCHLUMBERGER HIGHLIGHTS AQUIFER MANAGEMENT SERVICES AT WETEX 2004
22 March 2004 - Schlumberger

On the occasion of WETEX 2004, Schlumberger Water Services, a leading international provider in aquifer management services, will be highlighting two of its cutting edge technologies in the Middle East market. The first of these is a technique that is proving today to have wide ranging applications in the Middle East and elsewhere. This is the storing of water underground in sub-surface aquifers, and then recovering it in time of need. Schlumberger is able to provide a high degree of confidence in this technique through its geophysical logging, simulation and modeling, wellfield construction, aquifer monitoring and project management expertise.

Large volumes of water can be stored safely in aquifers by recharging through specially designed wells capable of providing recovery, whenever needed, through the same wells. In such a manner, water can be stored at a fraction of the cost of the conventional approaches (e.g., surface reservoirs and tanks). It is possible to store a few billion gallons underground that can be called upon to supplement or support a city's water supply for up to a number of months.

The second is the company's monitoring services that specialize in the design and deployment of groundwater monitoring instruments and networks for single and multi-level water zones. These systems form an integral part of a comprehensive groundwater management programme that aims at maintaining the quality and quantity of groundwater.

Single zone measurements are aided by the use of a number of robust, self-contained, small instruments installed in the well with built in memories that can last a number of years. Measurements taken include groundwater level, temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen and atmospheric pressure for quality control. The whole system minimizes human interface and the possibility of errors. Multi-level monitoring uses a high quality modular instrumentation system complete with packers for groundwater monitoring in multi-level water zones in the same borehole. Sensors measure fluid pressure and temperature, collect fluid samples or test hydrogeologic parameters.
