TELESPREE SELECTS AXALTO VIEWS DEVELOPER FOR GSM SIM APPLICATIONS
05 January 2005 - Schlumberger

Axalto, formerly Schlumberger Smart Cards and Terminals, today announced that Telespree Communications, the leading provider of self-service solutions for wireless carriers, has selected the Axalto VIEWS Developer, a development tool for Global System for Mobile Communications Subscriber Identity Module applications.

Telespree is using VIEWS Developer to create a GSM version of Self-Service Set-Up, a highly automated wireless industry solution jointly developed with VeriSign, Inc. Self-Service Set-Up intuitively guides consumers through the activation and account set-up process using only the mobile device itself without the aid of a sales clerk or call center.

VIEWS is a suite of development tools that integrates a GSM phone simulator and an Over-the-Air (OTA) host simulator in one desktop environment. Compliant with GSM standards 11.11 and 11.14, the SIM Tool Kit (STK) part of VIEWS enables users to develop and test STK applets on their PC. Since it is tightly integrated with the OTA host simulator, the interactions of the wireless phone application and the host can be thoroughly tested before making any SIM cards and putting them in phones.

'Axalto VIEWS is a real time saver when developing an application like Telespree's self-service solution, because you can debug the entire application including the back office,' said Jack Jania, director of MobileCom marketing for Axalto. 'Until now, developers would have to write their applet, make a SIM test card, put it in the phone and only then could they test it. This whole process was repeated throughout the development cycle until everything was fully tested for functionality and user friendliness. Axalto VIEWS eliminates that iterative develop, burn and test cycle, because the entire system from the user interface to the host interaction can be tested on a desktop PC. The end result is a significant reduction in the time needed for application development and a faster time to market, said Jania.

'VIEWS Developer provides Telespree with a robust SIM development environment that enables us to deliver our Self-Service Set-Up application suite to GSM carriers,' said Jim Lavine, vice president of engineering for Telespree Communications. 'By implementing our self-service solution as a SIM toolkit application, it provides a ubiquitous implementation for all GSM devices.'

Powering on a Self-Service Set-Up enabled device triggers an automated, interactive process that manages device activation or reactivation, customer account set-up, service selection and device programming. Once connected, the user may provide personal and/or credit information and indicate service preferences using the device as a portal. Using the collected data, accounts are created or updated in the carrier's billing systems. Finally, the platform completes device programming and activation.

This highly automated solution takes customers from device purchase to active users in a matter of minutes without customer service or retail agent support, resulting in a highly cost-effective process tailored to the end-user. The platform consists of server elements that reside in the carrier's network and the Secure Instant Wireless Access micro-client that resides as a SIM toolkit application on the wireless device.
