ABB has won a $17 million order to supply a turnkey indoor substation for City of Glendale Water & Power utility in California to help it meet increased energy demand. ABB said it won the contract to upgrade the Kellogg-Airway switchyard because of the reliability and safety of ABB equipment, as well as the compact size of its technology in an area where space is at a premium. The project includes engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of the substation and associated equipment. The main component is a 69kV gas-insulated switchgear (GIS). ABB developed GIS in the 1960s and has completed some 15,000 GIS projects worldwide. GIS has a smaller footprint, shorter delivery time, and lower operating and maintenance costs than air-insulated applications. GIS is one of several proven technologies developed by ABB and is part of a comprehensive portfolio of transmission and distribution products and solutions designed to enhance grid reliability.
