On 30 April 2004, SAGEM signed a contract with the Home Office, Immigration and Nationality Directorate, for the supply of an iris-based immigration system. This solution called Iris Recognition Immigration System will be deployed at terminals in five major airports in the United Kingdom: Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham and Stansted. Additionally, a number of mobile enrolment units will be provided. The United Kingdom Immigration and Nationality Department has contracted SAGEM to provide an innovative and groundbreaking system to improve the security of the country with respect to the control of travellers' entry in the United Kingdom and to expedite the arrival processing of passengers enrolled in the system. SAGEM is using Iridian Technologies Inc. iris recognition software as an important element in its product offering. Passengers will register in advance and will be able to use IRIS at arrival points in the airports. The fully automated system will quickly identify the travellers through recognition of their iris characteristics. This tokenless approach has major benefits for the travellers in that the arrival process is quicker. Travellers will continue to carry passports, however no supplementary documentation is required and there is no modification to existing travel documents. The high level of security is ensured through the integrity of the iris matching software. IRIS is one of the first projects in the world to use iris technology on such a large scale and reinforces SAGEM's position as the world leader in the provision of secure, large-scale biometric identification solutions.
