19 January 2004 - Sagem Communication

The Military Applications Directorate of the French Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique has notified SAGEM of the follow-on of the SAHA contract, consisting of the design and implementation of the laser beam lines (exclusive of the amplifiers) of the Megajoule Laser project.

The Military Applications Directorate of the French Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique has notified SAGEM of the follow-on of the SAHA contract, consisting of the design and implementation of the laser beam lines (exclusive of the amplifiers) of the Megajoule Laser project.

For this undertaking, worth 200 million euros, SAGEM's technical teams will integrate various technologies well mastered within the Group: optical systems, servo-mechanisms, high precision mechanics, vacuum, cleanliness, etc. The SAGEM teams, working in close co-operation with those of the CEA, have contributed to the success of the prototype phase, known as Laser Integration Line made up of eight laser beams and intended to validate the definition of the final Megajoule Laser project.

It must be noted that the world record for the production of energy in ultraviolet light (9.5 kJ) has been achieved, on April 11, 2003, on one of the laser beams of the LIL.

The Megajoule Laser is one of the majors tools in the large scale simulation programme, implemented since 1999 by CEA's Military Applications Directorate, to ensure the long term consistency of the French deterrent force, since the nuclear tests were stopped. Located at CEA-CESTA, near Bordeaux, it will be composed of 240 laser beams and will start operation in 2010.

Groupe SAGEM is an internationally based high-technology group. The second largest French group in the field of telecommunications, the third European company in electronics for defence and security, the world leader in fingerprint-based biometrics, major actor in avionics and information systems for aircraft, SAGEM maintains a presence in more than 20 countries.
