GEMPLUS & SAGEM SIGN COOPERATION AGREEMENT FOR DEVELOPMENT OF BIOMETRICS & SMART CARD TECHNOLOGY

| Gemplus, leading provider of smart card solutions and Sagem, leader in biometrics based identity applications, today announced their signing of a cooperation agreement with a view for both companies to jointly pursue development and activities in the field of biometrics and smart card technology for secure identity solutions. Sagem provides advanced biometrics technology and system integration technology and expertise, while Gemplus delivers smart cards technology, as well as the related software & services required for identity programs. |
Smart card-based biometric recognition inside the identity segment is expected to experience rapid growth in the future. This cooperation agreement will enable Gemplus and Sagem to benefit fully from the proven complementarily of each other's technologies, and their combined know-how and experience in the field of secure identity projects. The cooperation derives from a recent joint national identity customer win in the Sultanate of Oman, where 1,5 million biometrics enabled smart cards are to be issued to the local population by the end of 2003.
