PRICE AND RELIABILITY TOPS FOR MOBILE TRANSACTION PRINTER USERS
12 July 2005 - Venture Development Corporation
| According to recent research by Venture Development Corporation, Mobile Transaction Printers: A Global Market Demand Analysis, the three most influential product features in mobile transaction printer selection are price, reliability, and connectivity. |
High-level trends specific to product selection for mobile printing systems include: Existing Wireless Infrastructure Influential in Mobile Printer Selection - Integration into existing systems is a primary driver for selecting a mobile transaction printer. If a company has a preexisting WLAN infrastructure, it may prefer an 802.11b-enabled printer. If not, many companies are not willing to invest in the installation of a complete WLAN network to operate mobile printers and will turn to cabled solutions or other WPAN solutions such as Bluetooth. Weight of Printer Not a Concern for End Users, A significant percentage of mobile transaction printers are transported by vehicles, carts, or employees using a shoulder strap or belt clip. As such, the weight of the printer is becoming less of a concern for end users because employees are not physically holding the device in their hand for extended periods of time, if at all. Importance of Print Technology Expected to Decline, Importance will decline as the mobile transaction printer market standardizes around thermal printing technology. Niche applications will still require ink jet or impact printers, however, the majority of solutions will default to a direct thermal printer, greatly reducing that part of the selection process. According to David Krebs, VDC's Mobile & Wireless Practice Director, 'As return on investment and total cost of ownership play an increasing role in the selection process, companies place greater emphasis on features such as reliability that may help forecast future system expenditures. Costs directly associated to reliability of a printer include maintenance/service fees, lost revenue due to product downtime/failure, and inaccurate data for misprinted labels/receipts.'
