According to new research by Venture Development Corporation, Mobile Transaction Printers: A Global Market Demand Analysis, the worldwide market for mobile transaction printers is sharply divided on the selection of data communication options. Nearly half the mobile transaction printer shipments are installed with cables as the method of data communication. Of those printers utilizing a wireless technology, supplier and end-user preferences vary widely. High-level trends specific to communication methods include: IrDA Demand Declining, While IrDA interfaces have become nearly ubiquitous on many mobile devices, actual use has remained limited because of the strict line-of-sight requirements. IrDA is expected to eventually become obsolete, displaced by Bluetooth or 802.1x wireless solutions. Bluetooth Top Choice Among Mobile Workforce, Mobile workers are aggressively seeking to reduce the number of cable connections, or eliminate them altogether where possible. In these environments, with limited, viable wireless options, Bluetooth is gaining momentum as the technology of choice. 'Inside-the-Four-Walls' Applications Prefer 802.11b Connectivity - as organizations increasingly adopt wireless LAN infrastructure. With network infrastructure in place and indoor applications often communicating with a central server, 802.11b-enabled printers are able to easily integrate into existing systems and eliminate the need for dual wireless solutions. According to VDC analyst David Krebs, 'It is not yet clear which wireless technology will become the preferred choice for mobile transaction printer solutions. IrDA is visibly on the decline; however, Bluetooth and 802.11 each have their advantages and disadvantages depending on the application and environment. I expect a split market with indoor solutions operating off of 802.11 and 'road' solutions using Bluetooth.'
