ARCOM LAUNCHES NEW EMBEDDED INDUSTRIAL INTERNET APPLIANCE (EIIA) DEVELOPMENT KIT
01 January 2001 - Arcom

Key aspects of this hardware and software kit include the ability to rapidly implement an embedded web server interface to applications and to offer embedded email services for automatic remote control and asset management.

This functionality can be added easily to existing DOS based applications. The EIIA Development Kit includes all the necessary hardware to operate these remote communication features via a direct RS-232 connection (PPP), an ethernet based LAN or a dial-up/auto-answer modem connection. The integrated V.34 OEM modem and international telco adapter kit allows rapid prototyping using the public switched telephone network.

The kit enables users to easily check out real world applications using the digital interface demonstration board included with the kit. This provides a keypad interface along with a character LCD display, sounder and switch inputs. All these functions can be controlled and monitored using a remote browser via the embedded web server product. Further, alarm conditions, service calls and status reports can initiate automatic email based transactions.

The development kit is designed for use in combination with Arcom's board based development kits and for £395 ($595) provides all the software and hardware to develop and evaluate internet based communication and control. The first model in the family of kits is for internetworking control using DOS based applications.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The Quickstart manual leads users easily through the steps required to achieve the appropriate network configuration. The EIIA Development Kit includes the modem, serial/LAN cables, demonstration board, power supply and software all in one packaged kit.

The software kit also allows files resident on the embedded system to be accessed via FTP or SMB. The embedded TCP/IP stack supports TCP, UDP and ICMP as well as BOOTP and DHCP (dynamic allocation of IP addresses for devices temporarily connected to the internet). CGI and SSI extensions allow users to easily initiate remote functions and applications using any remote browser. Remote access security is enhanced by offering a call-back feature.

The suit of software is based on Datalight's Sockets product and has been designed to operate with Arcom's range of embedded processor boards. Arcom offers a wide selection of boards from low cost 80C188EB and 386EX boards to high performance Pentium class processors.
