ARCOM ANNOUNCE LINUX/JAVA TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT KIT FOR OEM EMBEDDED PC APPLICATIONS
02 February 2002 - Arcom

The GNU/Linux operating system has been architectured by Arcom (AEL 2.02) and optimized for use on Arcom hardware platforms. The IBM JVM and your Java based application will load and execute directly from the on board 16MByte Flash memory using the high reliability compressed Flash filing system (JFFS2).

This comprehensive Development Kit includes the SBC-GX1 single board computer, PSU, mouse, full cable set, Quickstart Manual and the Arcom Development Kit Utility CD. An optional NEC 6.5' TFT color LCD module and analog touchscreen is also available. Also included is IBM's award winning VisualAge Micro Edition 1.4 development tools to let you quickly develop, debug and deploy your Java based application.

Arcom is pleased to be a technology 'associate' in the IBM VisualAge Micro Edition partner program. 'Our work with Arcom optimizing the J9 Virtual Machine for the Arcom SBC-GX1 board, presents the developer with a complete target environment' said Angus McIntyre, Program Director / Marketing, IBM Embedded Systems Group. 'Arcom's combination of hardware and software, along with the award-winning productivity of the VisualAge Micro Edition development tools, reduces the much-dreaded setup time and allows developers to focus on their application.'

The IBM development suite also features many other technologies such as DB2 Everyplace and Database Enabler for database applications, MQSeries Everyplace for data delivery into IBM's middleware solutions, P3ML, an XML-based GUI and Service Management Framework for configuration management within distributed systems.

Arcom is also an IBM Advanced Level Business Partner serving the pervasive computing market. Arcom is able to provide fully integrated embedded PC platforms running a proven implementation of embedded Linux and a JVM, along with the communication support to provide reliable data delivery from field devices into enterprise applications.

The SBC-GX1 single board computer used in the Development Kit is a 300MHz National Semiconductor Geode based board offering CRT/TFT VGA graphics, 10/100baseTx Ethernet, four serial ports (RS232/485), FDD/IDE interfaces, digital I/O and expansion via PC/104, standard PCI and a Compact Flash port. This fan-less, low power EBX compatible board is ideal for cost sensitive OEM applications.
