According to a recent report from Venture Development Corporation, prospects are brightening for proximity and linear displacement sensor markets in North America. VDC anticipates positive growth rates in North American markets for these sensors through 2007, based on improving health of the U.S. economy and increasing implementation of these sensors for monitoring and control in a wide variety of products and equipment.

Overall, the largest share is for industrial automation applications, but many are also used elsewhere such as in HVAC, medical, metrology, military/aerospace, office automation, printing, and security equipment, and in transportation vehicles. Utilization of these position sensors results in better performance, such as improvements in accuracy, efficiency, enhanced functionality, faster operation, higher productivity, and better quality control.

Many technologies are used in proximity and linear displacement sensors. VDC forecasts that among these the markets for optical type devices will grow the fastest. The North American market for photoelectric proximity sensors is forecast increase overall at a 6.1% CAGR through 2007. Photoelectric proximity sensors utilize several types of light sources. Among these, the fastest shipment growth rates to North American markets are expected for infrared and laser-based products. Infrared sensors efficiently produce a strong beam that is desirable for long range sensing.

The North American market for laser systems is expected to be the fastest growing among the linear displacement sensor products studied, at an 8.5% CAGR through 2007. Laser proximity and linear displacement sensors have long range and small target capabilities.
