MICROSOFT EMERGING AS MOST PREDICTABLE PLATFORM

In the highly cost and time-sensitive market of mobile application development, overall development time and development time predictability are two of the most critical issues facing developers. Based on recent research conducted by VDC, Microsoft's Windows Mobile platform has emerged as the most predictable platform (in terms of development time).

VDC surveyed over 1000 global mobile developers in support of its recently published Mobile Software Stack research report. According to David Krebs, Mobile & Wireless Practice Director, 'When evaluating mobile operating systems, a lot of consideration is placed on upfront license cost, however, a more relevant criterion should be total cost of development.' Factors driving longer development times for non-Microsoft operating systems include:

Developing and porting hardware device drivers;
Software diagnostics, testing and validation; and
Operating system image customization.

Krebs continues, 'While Microsoft continues to face an uphill battle in the total mobile device market, recent changes - made to address wireless support, device management and security in addition to its simple licensing model - positions the OS more favorably with device OEMs/ODMs, developers and ultimately end users.'
