A recent market study by Venture Development Corporation finds that the increased use of distributed power and intermediate bus architectures is driving demand for point of load DC/DC converters. This is considerably changing the overall performance requirements of DC/DC converters as a core value-add of DC/DC POL is support for rapidly evolving microprocessor specifications. Microprocessors require tighter regulation, greater efficiencies, and faster transient response from their power supplies. The ongoing trend toward distributed power architectures requires new solutions. POLs are becoming the most popular solution, commonly used in systems with high power densities. They are currently found most often in telecommunication and office automation market segments; however, the intermediate bus architecture is not as common in Europe and Japan where systems are typically rated for lower power densities. According to VDC, 'OEMs' primary technical selection criteria are focused on lower voltages, higher current, tighter regulation, and faster transient responses. Increased competition in POL sales is expected, which will likely result in standardization and lower prices. This will benefit OEMs by providing a lower bill of materials, more selection and interchangeability between suppliers, simpler system designs, and reduced obsolescence and maintenance costs.' VDC expects a 28% growth in annual unit sales of POLs, and estimates the worldwide market for POLs will be $545 million in 2005.
