IMS – LED BY INFRASTRUCTURE VENDORS
02 August 2005 - Venture Development Corporation

The initial IMS market is dominated by Application Servers, many of which do not need full IMS infrastructure to be deployed. IMS softswitches and HSS will start to play a larger role as IMS networks mature. MRF products show potential, but will have to wait on new, advanced IMS applications to play a larger role.

Application Servers - Stand-alone application and feature servers and application gateway products.

Home Subscriber Servers - Database products for storing IMS subscriber information; includes hybrid HLR/HSS products.

IMS Softswitches - Includes new IMS-based CSCFs, MGCF, BGCF components performing gateway control, proxy, and core signaling functions - usually bundled together in one or more physical devices, and stand-alone Session Border Controller P-CSCF devices.

Media Resource Function Products - Media server products that support MRFP IMS functions and can be controlled by SIP and/or H.248 signaling.

'The market for IMS products is very real and emerging rapidly,' says Chad Hart, Director of VDC's Telecom/Datacom Practice. 'This emergence will continue because IMS is the universally accepted network standard, a standard that will likely be mandated by nearly every carrier deploying new infrastructure before the end of the decade. While this is an ideal situation for IMS vendors, this will be a difficult market to capture for the next few years. IMS products have a long way to go and it will take time before carriers accept the IMS business case.'
