NEW RESEARCH BY VENTURE DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION IS CREATING AN IMS INDUSTRY STAKEHOLDER MAP
28 April 2005 - Venture Development Corporation

On the supply side, several camps of vendors are vying to take control (or greater control) of the supply side of the telecom core infrastructure market. IMS creates opportunities for many of these vendors to repackage their existing products as IMS upgrades and convergence products. For others non-traditional telecom vendors, IMS creates a new opportunity for a disruptive market entry.

The IMS architecture can be applied to nearly any kind of carrier network today. There is a great deal of uncertainty on the carrier demand side on how quickly and to what extent operators will adopt the technology. These adoption strategies will have an obvious effect on the short-term market opportunity for IMS vendor and system integrator communities.

VDC's stakeholder map defines primary IMS suppliers, integrators, and user groups; identifies issues and objectives driving each group's investment in IMS, and details how IMS adoption will benefit each of these stakeholders. This map will be updated on a quarterly basis as this emerging industry quickly evolves. The below table provides a high-level excerpt:

Traditional Wireline Vendors ILECS, RBOCs, and PTTs with mixed TDM and VoIP networks Create new service offerings and business model opportunities for the triple-play market.

Internet Telephony Service Providers Internet based VoIP providers without their own access networks Gain entry to a larger number of access networks
Cable Operators Cable operators with growing telephony and VoIP product offerings Standardize infrastructure to create a open, more competitive vendor community

'IMS provides a common vision of the Universal Next Generation Network,' comments VDC's Telecom Practice Director, Chad Hart. 'Although, this vision has been broadly accepted in nearly all Telecom communities, IMS is still a work-in-progress and many important details have yet to be resolved. A variety of leading vendors are using this ambiguity as an opportunity to push the market in their direction. The dynamic that emerges over the next 12 to 18 months will likely have a long-term impact on the role, if any, each of these stakeholders will ultimately play in the market. This will be a battle on all fronts.'
