ABB WINS $70 MILLION ORDERS TO STRENGTHEN POWER SUPPLY IN MEXICO
29 November 2004 - ABB (Power Technologies)

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, said today it has won contracts worth $70 million for three projects to strengthen Mexico's power supply. The contracts, awarded by Comisión Federal de Electricidad, the Mexican state-owned utility, will enlarge the transmission network in different parts of the country.

'ABB's dependable high-voltage technology, as well as our ability to deliver and install equipment quickly, were key to obtaining these contracts,' said Peter Smits, head of Power Technologies division. 'We have a long history of successfully supplying customers in Mexico and meeting their requirements.'

Under the first contract, ABB will replace an existing 400kV air-insulated substation with a new, more compact 400kV gas-insulated substation, and carry out other engineering work at the site in the state of Colima.

In a consortium with Eléctricas de Medellin of Colombia, ABB will supply three turnkey 400 and 230 kV air-insulated substations as well as 400kV power transformers, power reactors and control and protections systems related to a power plant in the state of San Luis Potosi.

Under the third contract, ABB is to supply a turnkey 400 kV static var compensator to a substation in the state of Aguascalientes, with delivery in only 16 months. The SVC is particularly suited to stabilize the network, once disturbances occur.

ABB has won a number of previous power contracts in Mexico. Since 2000, the company has provided 12 gas-insulated switchgear and 17 air-insulated switchgear substations to both utility and industry customers. In addition, ABB has delivered 12 SVCs to CFE over the past ten years.
