UPGRADE OF EIGHT SUBSTATIONS TO INCREASE POWER SUPPLY CAPACITY
21 December 2004 - ABB (Power Technologies)

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, said today it has won a turnkey contract in Algeria worth $25 million to upgrade eight existing substations which will improve electricity supply in and around the capital, Algiers.

The contract, signed with Sonelgaz, is designed to meet the growing demand for energy.

The contract comprises extensions as well as upgrades to various 220/60/30 and 10kV substations, which ABB will achieve with minimal power interruptions for consumers. The order will be completed within 15 months – ahead of the industry standard.

'Our ability to complete the project quickly and the reliability of our technology were decisive in winning the order,' said Peter Smits, head of ABB's Power Technologies division. 'In addition, we have proved to be a reliable partner for Sonelgaz in Algeria in recent similar projects.'

The project involves the design, manufacture, testing, erection and commissioning of the switchgear, new transformers and associated equipment. ABB will supply power transformers, various high-voltage equipment as well as control and protection panels, including substation automation and telecommunication systems.

A major part of the project is the replacement of 125 medium-voltage switchgear cubicles. Installation has to done gradually to ensure the power supply is not interrpted. The first bays are scheduled to be delivered in March 2005.

It is the latest in a series of orders from Sonelgaz. Including the latest contract, ABB has won orders worth $105 million from Sonelgaz in 2004.
