ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, said today it has won two contracts worth a total of $21 million to build power systems to link a new cement plant to Mexico's national grid.

The contracts were awarded by Mexican company Cementos Cruz Azul and the German firm Polysius, which have overall responsibility for constructing the cement plant in the state of Puebla. It will produce 3,000 tons of clinker daily.

'ABB's wide-range of proven high-voltage technologies and our service capabilities were key to obtaining these contracts,' said Peter Smits, head of ABB's Power Technologies division. 'The project will supply reliable power to the new cement plant and will play a vital role in strengthening the industrial productivity of Cementos Cruz Azul.'

Under the contracts, ABB will build an air-insulated substation and a transmission line of 400 kV, and a 400 kV and 100 MVA gas-insulated substation. The gas-insulated substation can step up output as the plant's production needs increase, which will ensure that the customer has reliable, high quality and flexible power supply for further expansion of the plant.

The main equipment will be manufactured at ABB plants in Mexico, Spain, Switzerland and Sweden. The project will start immediately is scheduled to end in 12 months, which is a record time for the industry.

ABB is a key supplier for power and automation technologies in Mexico. ABB is currently, carrying out projects with Mexican utilities companies PEMEX and CFE worth more than $250 million.
