SERIES OF ORDERS WILL INCREASE CAPACITY AND POWER QUALITY FOR CUSTOMERS

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, said today it has won a series of orders worth about $30 million to supply static var compensator technology to boost the production of steelmakers in China, Iran, Italy, Russia, Spain, Taiwan and Turkey. The orders have been won in the first five months of 2005.

As the number one supplier of SVC worldwide, ABB has more than 400 installations either in service or under construction. ABB's SVC technology will be on display at the international power distribution fair CIRED 2005, held from June 6-9 in Turin, Italy.

'This technology is in strong demand by steelmakers as they improve productivity to satisfy the booming worldwide demand for steel,' says Michael Hirth, head of ABB's Power Technology Systems business area. 'Normally we sign some four contracts per year for this SVC application, but we already have eight contracts in the first five months of 2005.'

SVC technology increases transmission capacity and stabilizes power supply, so that steel plants can increase production. SVC is part of the package of Flexible AC Transmission Systems technologies from ABB that enhance the security, capacity and flexibility of power transmission systems.

Huge demand for steel, especially in China, is spurring new investment by steel producers to increase melt capacity and improve power supply.

In March 2005, the largest SVC application for steel manufacturers ever installed at 310 MVAr was awarded in Turkey. The application will supply one of the biggest electrical arc furnaces in the world, scheduled to come online in February 2006. Since the early 1970s, ABB has delivered more than 200 SVC installations to the steel industry worldwide, and has a pioneering tradition in the field.
