ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, said today it has won a $27 million turnkey order from MEW Bahrain for indoor substations. The new power systems are needed to strengthen and stabilize the transmission network in Bahrain. The main cause for Bahrain's enhanced power supply is its rapidly growing industry base. High reliability requirements were also the reason to select ABB's gas-insulated substations. 'Our GIS technology meets highest reliability standards and can be placed indoors due to its very compact design,' says Peter Smits, head of ABB's Power Technologies division. Under the terms of the turnkey contract, ABB will supply three new 220 kV GIS substations for the 'Bahrain Financial Harbour', for the power plant 'Sitra' as well as for the residential area 'Buquwwah'. The order includes control, protection and auxiliary equipment. ABB will also carry out testing, installation and commissioning. Another key factor for winning the order was the short delivery time. The substations have to be engineered, manufactured and commissioned by the end of July 2007. For ABB, this is the latest project in a series of orders in the Middle East region, where the company also has a long standing history along the entire gulf coast.
