ABB, the leading global power and automation technology group, said today it has won a $27 million order from LKAB group of Sweden to supply automation and electrical equipment for the expansion of its iron ore pellet production facilities. LKAB, the only iron ore exporter within the European Union, decided in late 2004 to invest in a new pelletizing plant, concentrator expansion and rail loading and unloading station near its mine at Malmberget in northern Sweden. The company selected ABB to equip the new plant and to expand the site's existing 145kV switchgear capabilities. 'This project reinforces a long-standing relationship with LKAB and our proven expertise in the minerals processing industries,' said Dinesh Paliwal, head of ABB's Automation Technologies Division and group operations in North America. 'By integrating technologies for process control, electrification and energy savings, we will support the customer's goals for growth with a highly-efficient solution.' ABB will supply complete electrification systems and Industrial IT process automation to the new production facilities, as well as the switchgear expansion. In addition, ABB will modernize process control systems for the existing concentrator, where ore is separated into valuable iron concentrates and rejected material, or tailings. Scope of supply includes medium-voltage switchgear and power factor compensation, emergency power distribution, intelligent motor control centres, instrumentation, as well as low-voltage and medium-voltage drives to increase the efficiency of large process fans. ABB services include complete project management, engineering, customer training, erection supervision and commissioning. The new plant is expected to be operational by the end of 2006.
