SIMPLE 'DROP-IN' CAPABILITY CITED AS NUMBER ONE REASON FOR FAST MARKET ADOPTION
06 August 2003 - Lantronix
| Since its launch in late February, sales of the award-winning XPort embedded device server line from Lantronix (Nasdaq: LTRX) have exceeded half a million dollars. An industry first, the thumb-sized XPort enables device manufacturers to embed a miniaturized network-communications server and website directly into the same space as a standard Ethernet connector. As a result, manufacturers can add cost-effective network connectivity to their products with a minimum of engineering, dramatically reducing their time to market and investment costs. |
'The fast growth of XPort is indicative of the overall market growth for network connectivity solutions that we expect will exponentially increase through the rest of the decade,' said John Williams, managing director for The FocalPoint Group, an industry analyst firm that specializes in machine-to-machine, mobile-to-machine and machine to mobile technologies. 'Everyday devices are beginning to be networked in order to unleash new levels of 'smart services' and commerce, and network-connectivity solutions will play a vital role in this transformation. Over the past couple of years, manufacturers have begun to network-enable their solutions to capitalize on the M2M technological infrastructure that exists today. This movement will not only lead to more product sales, but also to entirely new business models,' said Williams. 'We specifically designed XPort to reduce the engineering risk and cost associated with adding networking capabilities to devices. Response from our customers has been very strong, and we are ahead of our preliminary sales goals,' said Geoffrey Boyce, executive vice president of marketing for Lantronix. 'With XPort, designers realize they do not need to spend upwards of 48 'person-months' and hundreds of thousands of dollars in development time becoming an expert on Ethernet and writing complex communications software when they can simply purchase an integrated solution from Lantronix. In addition, the high level of integration and associated manufacturing process make XPort ideal for very high-volume, cost-sensitive applications.' The XPort is a self-contained network communications server and miniaturized web site enclosed within a ruggedized RJ-45 package, which can be embedded in virtually any electronic device. Devices incorporating XPort have their own address on the World Wide Web and can be accessed from any Web browser, including from a PC or cell phone, from anywhere in the world. The XPort can serve up Internet-standard XML pages, independently issue e-mails for notifications or alerts, and run other applications as defined by the device manufacturer. XPort eliminates the complexity of creating a network connectivity by providing a complete, integrated solution that includes a 10Base-T / 100Base-TX Ethernet connection, reliable and proven operating system, an embedded Web server, flexible firmware, a full TCP/IP protocol stack, and optional 256-bit standards-based encryption. An XPort Development Kit is available for around $140 to provide a quick and cost-effective way to evaluate the product. The kit can enable manufacturers to jumpstart their development work by providing the following items: a circuit board assembly with the XPort, a power supply, configuration options, status LEDs and an RS232 serial interface for an easy connection to a PC. A reset circuit with a push-button reset, status LEDs and a timer circuit are also available.
