Explaining the role of Eurescom in this process, Mr. Kennedy said: 'Eurescom will identify these issues and, together with the leading industry organisations, establish and manage collaborative projects to solve these issues in a cost-effective way.' Mr Kennedy's predecessor, Dr. Claudio Carrelli, has been director of Eurescom since June 1998. Previously, he had worked for 35 years with the Italian telephone operating company, now Telecom Italia, where he served in several positions and responsibilities including R&D, marketing, and international relations. Throughout his career, Dr. Carrelli has been actively involved in international telecommunications, particularly within the International Telecommunication Union and as president of the Information Society Forum, an advisory body to the European Commission on technological and social matters.
