Heidelberg. The vision of having communications services available whenever and wherever you need them is becoming reality. The Eurescom Summit 2005 in Heidelberg, which begins on Wednesday, 27 April, presents the latest R&D trends in 'Ubiquitous Services and Applications' that will come to the market in the near future.

At the three-day conference 41 researchers and developers from leading companies in the information and communications sector will present their latest results. The speakers come from 15 countries, including a number of European countries, the USA, Japan, and China. They will inform the international trade audience about technological advances in areas like ambient networks, mobile peer-to-peer networks, multimodal user interfaces, wearable computers, and personalised communication services. The conference is opened with a keynote speech by Dr. Fiona Williams from Ericsson. She will introduce the European eMobility technology platform for future research in the mobile and wireless area. On the second conference day, keynote speaker Dr. Norbert A. Streitz from Fraunhofer institute IPSI in Darmstadt, Germany, will present his vision of a communication environment in which computers disappear, because computing and communication capabilities are built into all kinds of everyday objects.

In addition to the technological aspects, the Eurescom Summit will also explore the business aspects of ubiquitous services and applications. One of the promising areas is machine-to-machine communication (M-to-M), whose challenges and opportunities will be explored in a panel discussion on Thursday, 28 April. Panelists are Dr. Volker Reible (Deutsche Telekom), Dr. Norbert Streitz (Fraunhofer IPSI), Dr. Dieter Schafhuber (BMW Group Research and Technology), and Dr. Fiona Williams (Ericsson). Moderated by Eurescom senior manager David Kennedy, the panel will explore a number of M-to-M topics that have the potential to change business and society in Europe, like, for example, self-financing machines. A controversial discussion can be expected on questions like 'What is the role of the user in M-to-M scenarios?' and 'Who will be the winning players in the M-to-M value chain?'
