APPLICATION INTERFACES BASED ON PARLAY/OSA WILL STIMULATE NEW COMMUNICATIONS SERVICES
13 November 2002 - European Institute for Research and Strategic Studies in Telecommunications GmbH (EURESCOM)

Heidelberg. At the two-day Eurescom workshop 'OSA and Parlay @ Work' in Heidelberg, which started today, it evolved as a common belief that the Parlay/OSA standard for application interfaces to telecoms networks is now ready for deployment. Ard-Jan Moerdijk, chairman of 3GPP OSA, said in his keynote speech: 'Parlay/OSA is mature and ready for a major take-off'.

He announced work on the new version of Parlay/OSA to be finished. Parlay 4.0 and 3GPP OSA Release 5 are currently being published. As a major achievement he mentioned that the bodies involved – the Parlay Group, 3GPP, and ETSI, have been aligned from the start of these releases, thus enabling one single Parlay/OSA developer community.

The new Parlay/OSA specifications offer enhanced features for security, call control, content-based charging, terminal capabilities, and presence and availability management, which enables, for example, that the user can decide, who will obtain information about his presence and availability. Eurescom project P1110 on 'Open Service Access', according to Mr Moerdijk, made important contributions to the new Parlay/OSA specifications, for instance by looking at the mechanisms for service level agreements and enhancements for user interaction through Voice XML.

Zygmunt Lozinski, president of the Parlay Group, reported in his speech a growing level of OSA/Parlay activities in Europe and Asia: 'We are starting to see deployments, and we are starting to see an increased number of products'. Several network operators, like BT, KPN, Orange, Telecom Italia, and Telsim, had already announced or started deployment of Parlay/OSA this year. By the end of 2002, around 20 Parlay/OSA gateways will be installed world-wide, Mr Lozinski said. He predicts a billion-dollar business for Parlay/OSA products by 2007.

Eurescom's director, Dr. Claudio Carrelli, regards the deployment of Parlay/OSA as important for the creation of new services, especially for peer-to-peer services. 'We need service interfaces at the periphery of the network,' he explained in his opening speech, 'OSA and Parlay will allow fast and flexible deployment of new services.' However, network operators see still some more issues to be solved prior to full deployment. As Anders Elleby, head of strategy affairs at Swisscom, said: 'We need to get more experience on Parlay/OSA.'
