OPEN SERVICE ACCESS IN TELECOMMUNICATIONS NETWORKS
15 February 2002 - European Institute for Research and Strategic Studies in Telecommunications GmbH (EURESCOM)

EURESCOM workshop 'OSA and Parlay' will explore the technological challenges and business opportunities of open application programming interfaces for telecommunications.

The success of 3G mobile networks will depend on new, value-added services. A promising way to push the provisioning of new services consists in opening the telecom networks for external service providers. Standardisation, mainly by the Parlay Group and 3GPP OSA, is already defining relevant interfaces between applications and networks, based on the Open Service Access concept. However, there are still a lot of technological challenges and business-related questions to explore, until this revolutionary development of telecom networks can take off.

At the 'OSA and Parlay' workshop in Heidelberg on 19 and 20 February the world's leading experts in this field will present the state-of-the-art and discuss the future opportunities of open service access and network-independent Application Programming Interfaces. Among the speakers are senior experts from companies like Deutsche Telekom, NTT Docomo, Ericsson, Sun, Siemens and IBM to name just a few. EURESCOM itself will present first results from its project on Open Service Access. More than 130 researchers from Europe, the USA and Asia have registered for the workshop.

'OSA and Parlay are among the hottest topics in the telecom networks domain this year,' organiser Uwe Herzog is convinced. What makes OSA and Parlay currently so exciting for telecom and IT insiders is the fact that their implementation would revolutionise the way business is done in telecommunications. Telecom operators could loose revenues from their own services, but could in return more than compensate for that by gaining profits from third party access charging and increased network usage. There are also regulatory issues involved. For the panel session on 20 February, at which high-level representatives from telecom operators, manufacturers, software providers and the German regulatory authority participate, Uwe Herzog anticipates a stimulating discussion.
