SHAREHOLDERS DECIDE TO RESTRUCTURE THE ORGANISATION FOR FUTURE CHALLENGES
21 December 2001 - European Institute for Research and Strategic Studies in Telecommunications GmbH (EURESCOM)

Heidelberg. 2002 will be a year of radical change at EURESCOM, the European institute for research and strategic studies in telecommunications. On 12 December this year, 16 shareholders decided to restructure the organisation to reflect the recent dramatic changes in the telecommunications market. This is to ensure EURESCOM will continue to be the leading collaborative R&D company in the telecommunications domain.

A steering group, chaired by Michel Dupire from France Télécom, has been set up to develop the new business model by March 2002. In the next EURESCOM General Assembly meeting on 15 May 2002, the 16 shareholders, and possibly some new participants, are expected to approve the new business model and legal framework for the company. The restructured organisation is intended to start operation on the 1st July 2002.

The goal is to transform EURESCOM into an even more dynamic collaborative R&D management company open to all. Network operators, service providers, manufacturers, suppliers and vendors who wish to collaborate on the issues facing the telecommunications industry today will be welcome to join. In fact, two major manufacturing companies from the telecom/IT sector have already announced their intention to join EURESCOM, once the new company structures are in place.

One aim of the new organisation is to lead Integrated Projects under the next R&D European Commission Framework Programme to convert leading edge research results into products and services benefiting European society and economy.

France Télécom's Patrice Collet, the chairman of the EURESCOM General Assembly, also wants the restructured company to be attractive to telecom players not yet involved in this type of collaborative R&D activity. He stated that 'The new EURESCOM should offer efficient and effective project management services and very attractive conditions suitable for all types of organisations.'

Joachim Claus, Deutsche Telekom, the chairman of EURESCOM's Board of Governors, sees increased collaboration as a means to shorten the time to return on investment in the currently challenged telecom industry. Mr Claus declared that 'More and more companies in the telecom sector are becoming aware that collaborative R&D can save time and money in finding the innovative solutions needed to generate new revenue streams in Next Generation Networks.'
