REVOLUTIONARY MULTIMEDIA APPLICATIONS VIA UMTS

Multimedia applications are the key to the success of third-generation mobile networks. But we're not just talking in terms of personal entertainment and about being able to watch videos on the move. Two EURESCOM projects have explored the network and service architecture for the mobile usage of multimedia in areas like tele-medecine and business travel. EURESCOM researchers have created the foundations of an advanced multimedia database, which paves the way for revolutionary applications through optical data search.

This is just one of the many innovations which will be unveiled at the EURESCOM summit 2001, which takes place from November 12 to 15 in Heidelberg. n 30 lectures and technical demonstrations, researchers from leading telecommunications firms in Europe and Japan will, in many cases for the first time, present the technologies and applications which will enable 3G networks and services to become reality.

On Tuesday November 13, EURESCOM director Dr Claudio Carrelli will open the main part of the conference, which will conclude the following day with a panel discussion among high-level experts about the economic perspectives for 3Gmobile networks. Around 200 researchers and managers from America, Europe and Asia are expected at the event, which has been organised by EURESCOM, in cooperation with VDE, the German electronics association.
