UMTS technology is ready for take-off. Researchers from major telecomms players in Europe and Japan have explored technologies and applications, which will enable a successful deployment of 3G networks and services. Most of them will present their new solutions for the first time at the EURESCOM Summit 2001 taking place in Heidelberg from 12 to 15 November.

'This event is going to be a milestone on the way to making 3G services a reality,' says Roberto Parodi, Executive Vice President New Venture Implementation at Telecom Italia Mobile and one of the programme committee members. The conference will bridge the gap between technological achievements and the marketing of new services, answering crucial questions, like: 'What are the 3G services really needed by customers?', 'How can you implement an effective service architecture?', and 'How can security and authentication issues be solved in a 3G network environment?'.

The conference is organised by EURESCOM, the European telecom research institute, VDE Association for Electrical, Electronics and Information Technologies, and ITG Information Technology Society within VDE. Six major companies have sponsored the event, and IST, ETSI and the IPv6 Forum have endorsed it.
