How do you integrate such diverse access technologies like ISDN, ADSL, GSM, Bluetooth and UMTS? The experts of the European telecom research institute EURESCOM have the answer, it consists of two letters: IP. As a current EURESCOM project has examined, the Internet Protocol with the extension Mobile IP fulfils all requirements, in order to function as a core network for mobile and fixed access technologies.

This has huge advantages for network operators and users. Even before the introduction of UMTS-networks many new services could be offered, like, for instance, traditional Internet services and mobile Virtual Private Networks. The deployment of mobile IP networks is easy. Thanks to this technology, users can be 'always on' while travelling.

However, on the way to universal mobile IP networks there are several technical issues to solve, which are currently being examined by EURESCOM. One of these issues is security for roaming via IP. EURESCOM proposes the development and use of a unified protocol and a unified roaming-standard.

More than 100 experts from Europe and overseas are discussing these and more issues of Mobile IP networks today and tomorrow (26/27 April 2001) at the EURESCOM MAIN 2001 workshop in Berlin.
