EURESCOM CELEBRATES ITS 10TH ANNIVERSARY WITH A HIGH-LEVEL CONFERENCE
01 March 2001 - European Institute for Research and Strategic Studies in Telecommunications GmbH (EURESCOM)
| EURESCOM, the European Institute for Research and Strategic Studies in Telecommunications, will celebrate its 10th anniversary in May with a look into the future. On 16 and 17 May a high-level conference will be held on the EURESCOM premises in Heidelberg. The participants will discuss how applied research influences the profitability and the share value of telecommunications organisations. |
Among the speakers are Robert Verrue, Director General 'Information Society' at the European Commission, Robert Lucky, Corporate Vice President of Applied Research at Telcordia Technologies, Dr. Hagen Hultzsch, Member of the Board of Management of Deutsche Telekom and Philip Laven, Technical Director of the European Broadcasting Union. The manufacturing industry viewpoint will also be presented. The panel discussion on the first day will be moderated by Michael J. Mandel, Economics Editor of Business Week. The second day is focussed on the present and future opportunities of collaborative innovation from the viewpoints of senior managers and researchers of telecom operators and from the viewpoints of equipment suppliers and venture analysts. In 1991 twenty major European network operators founded EURESCOM, an institute for collaborative research in telecommunications that is still unique. The Heidelberg-based institute works as a virtual company. The permanent employees manage more than 50 projects every year, using the manpower, expertise and facilities of the EURESCOM shareholders to generate results, which would be hard to achieve for a single company alone. This collaborative approach has proven to be extremely effective. EURESCOM had a significant influence on numerous telecommunication standards and has produced many exploitable technical results. Among them are the creation of the Pan-European Telecommunication Management Networks Laboratory, technical issues concerning the standardisation of Asynchronous Transfer Mode and the development of Intelligent Networks. EURESCOM's interoperability test suites have found widespread use, among other reasons due to their high cost-saving potential. Recently, EURESCOM has explored new opportunities of future Internet protocols, such as IPv6, and contributed to the development of UMTS networks.
