A delegation of JEITA, the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association, visited the EURESCOM headquarters on their study mission to Europe for an information meeting on 7th December 2000. The six members of the high-speed access network sub-committee of JEITA's Network Technology Committee, most of them senior engineers from major Japanese IT companies, are visiting selected companies in Germany and France to find trends of up-to-date technologies in Europe.

Their chairman, Professor Hiromasa Ikeda, was especially interested in an exchange of views on technological priorities, future strategies and perspectives backed by the advanced research and development in the networking security technology. After an introduction by EURESCOM's Director, Dr. Claudio Carrelli, Senior Programme Manager David Kennedy and Project Supervisor Adam Kapovits presented some of the latest EURESCOM results on broadband access networks.

Takuya Kitamura, Senior Engineer of Fujitsu, and Kenta Takumi, Chief Engineer of the NEC computer group, explained the present technology trends of access networks in Japan with special regard to Internet access networks, both fixed and mobile. A fruitful discussion followed on trends of access networks in Europe compared to Japan.

The JEITA study mission has the task to write a report on the international developments in access networks for the Japanese government. The Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association is a non-profit extra-governmental body which represents the computer, the semiconductor and the consumer electric manufacturers of Japan. JEITA was inaugurated on November 1, 2000, through the merger of the Japan Electronic Industry Development Association and Electronic Industries Association of Japan.
