Heidelberg. At their meeting on 22 November 2000 the EURESCOM Board of Governors endorsed a draft Work Programme for 2001 containing 22 existing projects that will continue after 2000 and 19 new projects to start early in 2001. A large majority of the projects that will start in 2001 are addressing Internet related issues. The Internet has a key role for enabling new businesses, and all shareholders of EURESCOM have a special interest in promoting this area. The basic features of next generation Internet (IPv6) have been tested and deployed in various experimental or trial networks. Specific aspects, such as transition, peering and always-on have been tested in EURESCOM and IETF projects. There is, however, little experience made with some of the newer features of IPv6 that are being standardised. EURESCOM will now investigate a selection of these new features and help to answer the deployment issues that arrive when deploying IPv6 in a multi-provider environment. The objective is to gain operational experience with IPv6 features and provide EURESCOM partners with information on how to deploy them in their networks. When it comes to services over IP, there is one protocol in addition to the Multi Protocol Label Switching that is attracting more and more attention in the industry: the Session Initiation Protocol. EURESCOM aims to demonstrate the feasibility of constructing and deployment of new telecommunications services over IP networks using open SIP solutions. The envisaged service platform will be accessed by heterogeneous terminals such as multimedia PCs, PDAs, etc. and will support personal and service mobility and multimedia in an any-to-any and multiparty communication. The setting-up of the new projects is now starting. Shareholders already announced their interest and offered resources. Most of the new projects are considering to work with suppliers and vendors. 'This is a positive development that will add value to the projects,' said Harald Johansen, the responsible Senior Manager at EURESCOM, after the Board meeting.
