THE EURESCOM WORKSHOP ON HYBRID NETWORKS PRESENTS NEW SERVICES AND PRODUCTS
15 November 2000 - European Institute for Research and Strategic Studies in Telecommunications GmbH (EURESCOM)

Heidelberg. The convergence of different network technologies is one of the most interesting topics in telecommunications. Unsurprisingly, EURESCOM's workshop on Hybrid Networks, which started on 15th November at the EURESCOM headquarters in Heidelberg, attracted more than 100 experts from telecom and IT companies.

The workshop explores advanced solutions for the evolution of Network Intelligence towards Next Generation Networks and its integration into an IP world. In her introductory statement Valerie Blavette, project supervisor and network expert from EURESCOM, stressed the opportunities of Hybrid Networks: 'Open up your current IN network to the IP paradigm, and you will get rewarded with easier service design development, easier service provisioning and more and more services.'

In the two days of the workshop 19 speakers from major operators, vendors and suppliers are presenting innovative solutions and approaches for the design of Hybrid Network services and products. They discuss, how heterogeneous networks like PSTN/IN and Internet can converge, how a joint service platform based on IN and Internet can be implemented, and how 3rd party service providers can be given access to the network preserving the network's integrity.

Important results from EURESCOM projects that explored these questions are presented to a wider audience for the first time. High-level experts from several major IT and telecom vendors, e.g. Lucent, Siemens and Ericsson, will present their views on Next Generation Network Intelligence and their migration and product strategies for Hybrid Networks. The workshop is accompanied by demonstrations of various prototypes of Hybrid Network services from EURESCOM and additional demonstrations from manufacturers.

In his opening speech, Dr. Claudio Carrelli, Director of EURESCOM, pointed out the relevance of 'hybrid' approaches for networks, quoting French philosopher Blaise Pascal, who said, 'multiplicity that does not reduce itself to unity is confusion', meaning that integration of networks is necessary for the desired interoperability. Alec Brusilovsky from Lucent and Chairman of the IETF Spirit, explained, how to combine the strengths of IP and PSTN networks, in his presentation. He argued for real-life services accomplished by 'dull' technology instead of using exciting technologies that are not appreciated by the customers. He gave the positive example of the mobile tracker, which is based on the convergence of IN and IP networks. The mobile tracker informs a computer via IP when a mobile phone receives a call.
