OPERADOR NACIONAL DO SISTEMA SELECTS FOXBORO REMOTE TERMINAL UNITS TO HELP CONTROL THE BRAZILIAN NATIONAL POWER GRID
17 January 2005 - Invensys plc
| Operador Nacional do Sistema Elétrico (ONS), the Brazilian National Electric Grid Operator, recently awarded CDI Power, a long term Foxboro SCADA products integrator in Brazil, a contract to automate the southern portion of the Brazilian electrical grid as part of the country-wide SINOCON energy dispatching project. Under this contract, Invensys will supply CDI with US $1.4 million worth of Foxboro's advanced remote terminal units (RTUs). These will serve as the core of the control platforms in 34 high-voltage electrical substations located in the states of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Paraná and Mato Grosso do Sul. |
Following a very demanding prequalification process in which ONS carefully evaluated the technical features, quality, reliability, and track record of a large number of remote terminal unit vendors, the Foxboro SCADA unit of Invensys Process Systems was selected as one of the four vendors to provide RTUs for the Brazilian energy dispatch network. The Foxboro RTU 50 is designed to provide highly reliable, high-performance electric substation automation functionality, including transformer synchronization, capacitor bank switching, circuit breaker re-closure, automatic load shedding, power calculations, IED interfacing, Sequence of Events (SOE) recording with 1 millisecond resolution, plus full data logging and archiving. Foxboro RTUs are already installed in more than 300 electrical substations across Brazil. About ONS ONS (Operador Nacional do Sistema Elétrico) based in Rio de Janeiro, was created in 1998 by the Brazilian Government to operate the National Interconnected Electric System as well as to administer the main transmission network in Brazil. ONS was organized as a privately owned non-profit civil entity and operates the Interconnected System by delegation from it's Administrative Board Members where the agents of the energy sector (Generation, Transmission and Distribution companies) are represented, following rules, criteria and methodologies established by a code called the Grid Procedures approved by ANEEL (the Brazilian Electric System Regulation Entity).
