INVENSYS AND HYPERION ANNOUNCE PARTNERSHIP TO IMPLEMENT DYNSIM-BASED OPERATOR TRAINING SIMULATORS IN GLOBAL PROCESS AND POWER PLANTS
17 January 2005 - Invensys plc

Invensys Process Systems, have announced an exclusive operator training simulator (OTS) partnership agreement. The agreement brings together DYNSIM and other leading edge simulation technology from Invensys' SimSci-Esscor unit and highly experienced global execution resources from both Hyperion and Invensys. 'With approximately 85 dedicated OTS engineers based around the world, the two companies represent one of the world's largest suppliers of OTS services to the Chemical, Oil & Gas, and Power Generation industries,' said Tom Fiske, Senior Analyst at ARC Advisory Group in Dedham, Massachusetts. Invensys' total simulation capability encompasses approximately 300 simulation engineers.

The combined team has extensive experience in delivering OTS services on a wide range of petrochemical and hydrocarbon processes, including Ethylene, PTA, Refining, Gas Plants, and Polymers as well as for Power Generation plants. The team has worked on OTS projects for many different distributed control systems (DCS). These include Emerson Delta V; Yokogawa Centum; and Honeywell TPS and Experion; as well as Invensys' own Foxboro-brand I/A Series systems. The team has worked on more than 100 OTS projects in the last four years involving the full range of OTS activities: modeling, DCS integration, user interface configuration, testing, training, documentation, and support.

The agreement enables Invensys to draw upon Hyperion's highly experienced simulation engineers to supplement its own staff and provide a true global execution capability. Together, the companies have in-depth delivery capabilities in Asia, Europe and the Middle East, North America and Latin America. These capabilities cover the design, implementation, delivery, maintenance and support of high fidelity dynamic simulators for use throughout the plant lifecycle, including operator training, operations improvement, and DCS check out.

Under the agreement, Hyperion will standardize on DYNSIM technology for all its future operator training simulator business. The agreement also allows Hyperion to resell the Invensys technology in certain regions and to develop and grow new markets for OTS solutions based on Invensys technology.

'As our business continues to grow, it is essential that we augment our resources for new markets and ensure they have the right skill sets to execute complex projects,' said John Derbyshire, VP Global Solutions, Invensys Process Systems. 'Hyperion represents a seasoned supplier in the operator training business; a supplier that already executes and delivers on a worldwide basis. Together we offer more than 1,000 man-years of dynamic operator training simulation experience.'

Dr. Symeon Kassianides, CEO of Hyperion, said, 'This is an exciting new phase in our growth, one which positions the two companies as a leading force in the worldwide market for operator training systems. With the largest skill base in this area and many successful implementations in major process plants throughout the world, Invensys and Hyperion expect to be a contender for most new opportunities in our target sectors.'

'This partnership appears to be well thought out and should be very beneficial to both companies,' commented Dave Woll, Vice President at the ARC Advisory Group. 'The synergy and long-term mutual prospects seen by the two companies are evidenced by their decision to enter into an exclusive OTS business partnership for joint marketing and sales as well as for joint development. ARC also sees this synergy and recognizes that the OTS business is a good place to focus it. As the process manufacturing industries strive to achieve and sustain a high level of operational excellence, OTS and simulation have moved from being considered as 'nice to have,' to being 'must haves.''

Dynamic simulation helps chemical, oil, and gas and other process manufacturers and power generation companies to significantly improve overall plant efficiency and bottom line performance and provide the ideal basis for efficient, risk-free operator training and operations improvement.

'Operator training simulators are detailed, high-fidelity real-time simulation systems that are custom-built to match the dynamic behavior of single or multiple plant units and their associated control systems,' added ARC Advisory Group's Tom Fiske. 'An OTS may be used throughout the plant lifecycle to train operating crews, improve plant reliability through improved response to abnormal situations, optimize throughput and product quality, and provide the basis for control strategy evaluation.'
