Echternach, Luxembourg – After the launch of the high-end Series 30i CNC last year, GE Fanuc has introduced two new CNC models the Series 31i and 32i. Offering compatible upgrade paths for current models, the new controllers have greatly enhanced specifications making them ideal for many types of machine. Designed and manufactured with the same high degree of quality and reliability as their predecessors, they offer an increased number of simultaneously executed CNC programs, enhanced surface finishing capabilities, as well as increased speed and enhanced ease-of-use.

The new GE Fanuc Series 31i-Model A CNC offers control for up to 20 axes and 6 spindles. Up to 4 paths are supported, each path selectable from milling, turning and loader types, with a maximum of 12 axes controlled per path, with up to 5 axes simultaneously on the Series 31i-A5. The new Series 32i-Model A CNC controls up to 9 axes and 2 spindles and 2 paths, with a maximum of 5 axes per path. The Series 31i and 32i have in-built PMC sequence controllers with execution speeds of 25ns/step for ladder programs. 3 ladder programs can be executed simultaneously.

New Open CNC models have also been introduced for the Series 31i and Series 32i. They offer the optimum combination of CNC and PC using high-speed data transfer. The Series 310i and 320i

Model A are high performance open CNCs which employ Windows 2000/XP, while the Series 310is and 320is Model A employ Windows CE.NET. They all support FOCAS2 (FANUC Open CNC API Specification version 2) as the interface between the CNC and Personal Computer.

A large choice of LCD displays, from 7.2 inch monochrome to 15 inch colour, are offered. They all have vertical soft keys, a full Qwerty keyboard and high resolution screen offering a very clear operator interface. The new size of a 15 inch screen together with the vertical and horizontal soft keys simplifies the operation for the end user. There is a choice of a slimline LCD Mounted type, with the CNC integrated behind the display; or a standalone model, where the CNC is located in a control cabinet and linked via a High Speed Serial Bus to the standard display unit or to a display unit with PC functionality. It is also possible to drive 2 displays from one standalone CNC, with a switch to select the current display: or to have multiple CNCs linked to a single PC, the operator able to select the CNC under PC control.

As with the Series 30i, new technologies were used to improve the cutting and surface finishing capabilities of the Series 31i and 32i. They all use the same new ultra high speed processor; a higher speed internal bus offering transfer performances 10 times those of current CNCs; higher speed servo current control; 16,000,000rev-1 pulse coders; as well as nanometre interpolation which is executed on all contouring moves. The new technologies have enabled 8 times faster interpolation cycle times, up to 600 block look-ahead for high accuracy contour control and 0.4 ms block processing times.

To facilitate large programs, such as for die mould cutting, up to 8 MB of program memory can be specified. It is also possible to use additional ATA Flash or Compact FlashTM Memory. To ensure high reliability, Error Correction Code is employed for internal data processing. The GE Fanuc Dual Check Safety feature, which is designed to help machine tool builders meet the machine safety category 3 of the European standard EN 954-1, is available as an option.
