Echternach, Luxembourg – GE Fanuc QuickTurn is a cost-effective, plug-and-play solution for automated operator control of turning machines. It replaces mechanical operator intervention with CNC technology, thereby increasing the machine's productivity and flexibility. The GE Fanuc QuickTurn package is easy to operate via a clearly laid out touchscreen. The hardware content comprises the touchscreen HMI, a motion control unit from the GE Fanuc 0i Mate-TB CNC Series and GE Fanuc Beta i-Series drives. The software also features macro-programs for the execution of semi-automatic cutting cycles. A PMC program controls all machine-related signals and peripheral components Operator control has been kept simple so that any experienced turner can use it without any CNC training. Neither G-code programming nor operating mode changeover is necessary. The control system is modelled on that of a conventional mechanical turning machine: the main work steps can be automated. QuickTurn also supports completely normal manual operation, using two electronic handwheels on the HMI. The operator defines the traversing limits on the X or Z axes via simple touchscreen inputs. A comprehensive selection of semi-automatic cycles, e.g. for outer roughing and inner roughing, rear face machining, taper turning and thread cutting, is available to the turner for complex contours that require the interpolation of two axes. Before commencing machining he selects the desired cycle and enters the dimensions. The turner moves the tool by means of the electronic handwheels until it is close to the workpiece. Then he engages start. A cut is executed and the axes return to the starting point. The operator must now perform a feed movement by means of the X-axis handwheel and once again engage start in order to execute the next cutting process. Once a cutting depth has been entered the entire cycle is processed automatically. The use of clear icons and interactive questions provide the operator with support during data input. Masks ensure that only the data that is really required has to be entered. The controller is operated only via the touchscreen. QuickTurn is thus a control tool which unites the operator control of a conventional turning machine with the flexibility and precision of a CNC machine.
