On 28 September 2004 NNE was awarded the Haden Freeman Award for Engineering Excellence. The award was given to NNE for the fast track construction of the world's largest insulin plant, built for the pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk A/S. The award was presented by the Rt. Hon Michael Portillo, MP at the Institution of Chemical Engineers Gala Awards Dinner, held at Christ Church, Spitalfields, London. Bo Harvig, General Manager of NNE US – a fast growing US subsidiary of NNE – accepted the award on behalf of the 400 NNE engineers who have been involved in the project. Hans Ole Voigt, General Manager of NNE A/S, emphasises the importance of the award to NNE: - When we built the insulin plant we only existed as a company in Denmark. Now we have subsidiaries in Europe, US and China, and therefore it is a very satisfying experience to achieve this international award as an incentive to continuing our internationalisation process, Hans Ole Voigt states.
The insulin plant was built as a gigantic fast track project. In June 2003, the first batches of insulin were shipped from the 32,000 square metres Insulin Bulk Plant, less than three years after the first turf was cut. The use of Modular Engineering was one of the main reasons that the factory could be built in such a short period of time. Maintaining a high level of safety at the site had very high priority throughout the project. The project was Denmark's safest building site in its category in 2002, despite the high speed in all phases of the project. The worst accident in the entire course of the project was a broken thumb!
