INSULIN PURIFICATION FACILITY WELL UNDER WAY

NNE's largest ongoing project is the planning and establishment of an insulin purification facility. Being built for Novo Nordisk A/S in Kalundborg, the new facility will be called PIA II and is a sister factory for PIA I, which NNE handed over to Novo Nordisk in 2001.

The factory is being built as a fast-track project using Modular Engineering to reduce construction time to 18 months, calculated from the granting of initial funding to final qualification and hand-over to the client. The first sod for PIA II was cut on 26 June 2003, and the topping-out ceremony was held on 27 February 2004.

In parallel with construction work, production plant is being produced and assembled in prefabricated units. These units will be transported to the building site and put in place in the building one by one. The next steps will then be establishing connections to and between the units, installing and testing a management system, and completing the building before conducting final tests and handing over the factory to the client.

In addition to the building and production plant, the project encompasses various auxiliary equipment, offices and process control laboratories. About 200 NNE employees are involved in building the factory covering well over 7,000 m2.

With a very few minor exceptions, work has progressed according to the time frame. Even the smallest delays are quickly identified and compensated for, a pre-requisite for smooth completion of the next project phase, when activities will be concentrated on the building site, and interdependencies between the numerous parallel processes really become a crucial factor for project management.
