The world's largest insulin plant, which NNE built for Novo Nordisk, was awarded a prize for its architecture by the Municipality of Kalundborg at a ceremony on 30 October 2003. The award committee led by the major of Kalundborg, Mr. Tommy Dinesen, gives the following reasons for awarding the prize: - The balanced architectural harmony and technical character, illustrates a delicate overall impression between the chemical production and the architectural expression of the plant. In addition to the major, the award committee counts architect Jørgen Dinesen, architect Bent Falk, the City and Land Society of Kalundborg, architect Egon Fruelund, and architechtural journalist Henrik Sten Møller. The prize included a plaquette and a diploma for the builder, Novo Nordisk. The 32,000 m2 Insulin Bulk Plant was inaugurated in June 2003, just two years after ground breaking. The plant is often called a 'superhighway' reflecting the long production building containing all manufacturing processes, from fermentation in one end to finished insulin chrystals in the other.
