On 1 November 2002, NNE officially handed over the NovoSeven plant to Novo Nordisk A/S in Hillerød. This happened just 18 months after approval of the project's Basic Design. With the short construction time NNE complied with the client's need for a speedy production expansion, dictated by an increasing demand for the haemophilia medicine NovoSeven. The factory is an example of a fast track engineering project where focus has been primarily on meeting an ambitious and very strict time table. This is a project that under normal circumstances would have taken twice as long to complete. In connection with the inauguration, Hans Ole Voigt, president of NNE, said: 'We approach clients within the biotechnological and pharmaceutical industry and it is therefore necessary for us to be in a position to deliver fast track construction solutions, offering our clients more and better advantages. One of the advantages is of course a faster introduction of the product into the market. Within the biotech and pharma industries this can be a decisive factor for the product to turn into a success or a fiasco. Another advantage is that a short construction duration makes it possible for the client to postpone the decision of building a new plant, that is, the decision can be made on a more stable foundation and the risk of misdirected investments is reduced'. The completion of the NovoSeven plant was possible due not least to the use of modular engineering, expressed in popular terms, the construction site is transformed into an assembly site. The entire construction is broken down into modules and both buildings and process plants are constructed decentrally and arrive as finished components to the factory where they are assembled. This is of course possible only based on a very close collaboration and teamwork with the suppliers who in most cases perform all necessary tests and validation of the production plant prior to delivery. Beyond this, the construction activities take place as parallel activities to the extent at all possible, and this again puts great demands on planning and coordination. And a precondition for all this is of course an efficient and flexible organisation. NNE's goal is to be in a position to deliver a finished factory in just 12 months. This goal is expected to be achieved in 2004.
