How can mechanical engineering improve packing economy? This question was the theme of a conference held on 29 August in Lund which was arranged by numerous Scandinavian engineering firms to discuss the trends in packing technology and packaging solutions.

NNE was represented at the conference by engineer and packing specialist Pia Nesager Pedersen. Here we give a summary of her presentation – the key points in her experience and not least how she thinks the future will be able to meet her need for the best packing solutions.

You can pack a product in different ways or, more correctly, using different solutions, all depending on how you want to spend your money. Either you can choose a costly and complicated mechanical solution, where at least the material is cheap. Or you choose to process the material to make the mechanical solution cheaper. It all depends on the situation or, in other words, on your specific needs and special requirements. The specialist must therefore not only advise on benefits and economy, but must also tailor a packing technology to specific objectives.

However, it is also important to have insight into the company's areas of operation (marketing, design and registration) in order to pack a product correctly. The product must not only be produced, it must be sold. Packing technology therefore involves all aspects of production when the specialist is developing a solution.

With regard to future trends and solutions, Pia Nesager is in no doubt: 'When it comes to big orders, the so-called 'white line' concept is ideal'. This involves printing order-specific information on essentially neutral packing material. By contrast, small orders necessitate cutting down both the time it takes to rearrange the format and then the time it takes to clean the machines.'
