NNE READY FOR THE WORLD MARKET
11 May 2005 - NNE A/S

A tenfold increase in the number of employees over the past ten years and a turnover on the right side of a billion. NNE has in earnest moved into the big league of engineering companies.

NNE has grown out of big sister Novo Nordisk's shadow. The company, which is a consultancy engineering company and supplier of plants to the biotechnological and pharmaceutical industry, was started in 1920 as a department at Novo Nordisk for the purpose of providing Novo Nordisk with engineering knowledge. In 1991, NNE was separated out as an independent company, but for a long time Novo Nordisk was their only customer. Today, NNE has stepped out on the free market, and although the projects for Novo Nordisk still fill most of the order book, NNE has been able to cement its name as the biggest consultancy company in its own market. A success that is directly reflected by the number of employees, by the bottom line and the relaxed hand that Hans Ole Voigt, president of NNE, extends to the monthly magazine 'Erhverv'.

In recent years we have experienced an intensive growth in Novo Nordisk's investments, and as they are our biggest customer this has resulted in an immense increase in our own activities. But our other customers also take up more space, this year representing more than 100 million Danish kroner of our turnover. We prefer a suitable balance between our customers. It is of utmost importance to us as well as to Novo Nordisk that we are competitive on the free market, Hans Ole Voigt stresses.

Most of NNE's projects by far have been for customers based in Denmark, but NNE has also worked on projects for Novo Nordisk in other countries. NNE is however more than ready to expand outside the borders - first and foremost on the Scandinavian market, and subsequently in all of Europe where NNE's name gets to be increasingly known in step with prestigious projects, such as Novo Nordisk's insulin plant in Kalundborg and Ferring's domicile in Ørestaden.

With approx 1,500 employees NNE is a large company compared to Danish standards, but internationally, NNE is the little brother in the big league of the consulting engineering companies.

NNE's strength is however to focus on its niche area within biotechnological and pharmaceutical production where the company is the leader in the market. In Denmark the biotech boom in the greater area of Copenhagen has helped NNE well on its way, and companies such as Ferring and Biogen have drawn on the engineers' competencies.

- We are still being somewhat sized up but we have proved that we can deliver optimum results in our core areas. We know the conditions that our customers work under, we know the regulatory requirements for their production and for the pertaining documentation, and we follow the market closely to be able to offer the best possible consultancy services to our customers. An illustration of this is when we can point out that the customer can benefit from a process optimisation instead of investing in extra production capacity. For this reason we also have to tie up with the best engineers and other employees, explains Hans Ole Voigt.

NNE is an attractive workplace. A recent survey in the magazine 'Ingeniøren' shows that NNE was ranked second, after big sister Novo Nordisk. The image survey was published in April and gives NNE top grades on parameters such as 'challenging and developing work', 'culture and spirit', and 'employee influence'. This image is of great importance when NNE is recruiting employees - an importance needed in step with the almost explosive growth in recent years. Today, NNE has 950 employees and 500 inhouse and other consultants. About 660 of these are engineers.

As a specialised engineering company with expertise in complex process plants, NNE does not have the capacity to also handle the more 'normal' contractual tasks. NNE has therefore entered into several strategic partnerships with other companies, and these partnerships result in NNE being able to offer total management and production of plants for the biotechnological and pharmaceutical industry.

We very much want to form partnerships with both vendors of equipment and with contractors so that together we can offer 'package solutions' containing production equipment and buildings. We strongly believe that these strategic partnerships are the future because we are thus in a position to take on a bigger part of the areas covered by our competencies. We can now take on the total delivery of finished plants to our customers, from digging to turnkey production, where we manage the entire process, Hans Ole Voigt stresses.
