ON WELL-KNOWN TERRITORY IN MEDICON VALLEY

| For a number of years, Copenhagen and the Øresund region have with a certain degree of luck attempted to market themselves as Medicon Valley. This means that in addition to the existing, large Danish companies already in the area, a number of foreign and smaller, new companies have established their presence, viewing the Øresund region as a stimulating climate within the biotechnological, pharmaceutical, medical device, and service and science areas. NNE sees great opportunities in a biotech boom in the Øresund region once it gets started. But NNE also looks at other markets. For a number of years, Copenhagen and the Øresund region have with a certain degree of luck attempted to market themselves as Medicon Valley. This means that in addition to the existing, large Danish companies already in the area, a number of foreign and smaller, new companies have established their presence, viewing the Øresund region as a stimulating climate within the biotechnological, pharmaceutical, medical device, and service and science areas. Medicon Valley represents highly educated people and know-how which everybody can benefit from. NNE fits like a fish in water into this climate and although the much talked-about biotech boom has not really asserted itself, John Frandsen, vice president at NNE, sees good opportunities for growth. Like most others, this trade still suffers from the after effects of September 11 last year. A certain degree of reluctance is felt but we believe that things will get rolling. Scandinavia is still a growth centre for the biotech industry together with a couple of other areas in Europe, among them Switzerland, says John Frandsen. As an example, he points at Biogen who has shown interest in moving into the area. Here, Biogen will keep company with all the big ones such as Novo Nordisk, AstraZeneca and Pharmacia, just as companies like Ferring, Coloplast, Lundbeck and a number of others have established themselves in the Øresund region. And the big companies play the roles of locomotives pulling a lot of other companies behind them into the area. They are all interesting to us because they operate within our core area, and in one capacity or another we have a foot in the door of all the companies working in the biotechnological and pharmaceutical industry. But also smaller companies have our highest priority and although we are understandably known for the big projects, we still solve a long series of smaller tasks, both for small and big companies. And we focus on treating all our customers on an equal footing, stresses John Frandsen. The Biotech boom has so far been characterised by high growth, not least at Novo Nordisk who has so far made its biggest investments ever. Given the nature of things, this situation will level out, but John Frandsen predicts that the boom will now come from the newly established companies in the area, from the layer of growth. Newly started companies and foreign companies, eg American companies who want to establish themselves in Europe all look for places offering knowledge and educated experts and scientists - a resource pool. It is not enough to be able to build a production. If you want to develop new products you must have available to you universities, research centres and a highly educated work force, and these assets are found in our region, says John Frandsen. NNE's base and core markets are presently in Scandinavia, but with the volume that NNE has achieved, expansion is unavoidable. The company must operate internationally and as many of the decision makers of the really big companies reside in USA and England it is only natural to look towards these countries for marketing of NNE's unique special competency areas. We are willing to enter into partnerships with engineering companies on their own 'turf' and we draw attention to ourselves at conferences and events where we can meet the decision makers. In Europe, we are among the biggest and can join in when the talk is about big, international projects. We showed this in China and I think that China is a coming, big market. It is hard to get into the US because some big, global companies are sitting on that market. We are contemplating alliances with American companies, but in the meantime I believe that the Asiatic market with China at the front is going to be big, and a good possibility for NNE to penetrate the East where development is very fast and the projects are realised on a fast track basis, once the decisions have been made, says John Frandsen, vice president at NNE.
